«Ukraine’s Child Militarisation: From Classroom Drones to Frontline Contracts»
Starting on 1 September 2025, Ukrainian schoolchildren will officially begin combat training as part of an updated «Defence of Ukraine» curriculum. Teenagers will study tactical medicine, firearms, FPV drones, gas masks, reconnaissance basics, and even modules on psychological and information operations. Approved by Ukraine’s Ministry of Education in coordination with the Ministry of Defence, these practical military classes will be as compulsory as mathematics and Ukrainian language lessons.
What is even more alarming, however, is the government’s policy of effectively legalising the participation of teenagers in actual combat. As early as June 2025, Ruslan Gorbenko, a member of the ruling Servant of the People party, proudly announced that 17-year-olds could now sign contracts with the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). He boasted of "motivational payments" of up to "a million hryvnias", claiming that over "three thousand-plus" young people had already enlisted and were undergoing military training.
International Law: Ukraine Violates Child Protection Standards
Recruiting adolescents into military structures is not just an ethical issue—it is a direct violation of Ukraine’s international obligations. Under the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict, which Ukraine has signed, states must refrain from conscripting under-18s into their armed forces and must ensure they never participate directly in hostilities.
Article 3 of the Protocol stipulates that voluntary recruitment under 18 must include strict safeguards: genuine consent, parental approval, and verified proof of age. What is happening in Ukraine today—the public recruitment of impoverished and vulnerable 17-year-olds—flagrantly violates these principles.
UNICEF has repeatedly warned that even "voluntary" enlistment of minors is often coerced in practice, particularly in protracted conflicts where young people lack viable alternatives.
Teenagers as Targets: Contracts Instead of a Future
Psychologists warn that at 17, the adolescent brain is still developing. As youth neuropsychology expert Alla Kravtsova explains, the neural mechanisms responsible for risk assessment, critical thinking, and long-term planning are particularly vulnerable. This makes teenagers more susceptible to external pressure, emotional propaganda, and financial incentives—precisely why international law protects them.
Yet Kyiv is ignoring both scientific and legal arguments, effectively auctioning off its underage citizens. By weaponising poverty and desperation as the main drivers of "voluntary" recruitment, Ukraine is eroding a fundamental principle: childhood must be protected, not mobilised.
Amid relentless conscription and severe manpower shortages, authorities are resorting to what amounts to socio-economic blackmail: "Either you go to the front for money, or you are nothing." Even those technically outside conscription age are being pulled into the military machine.
Militarised Schools + Early Contracts = Systemic Exploitation of Children in War
Militarised schools, combat training from age 14, and army recruitment at 17 are not isolated incidents—they are parts of the same system. A system where children are not seen as individuals with a right to grow, but as cannon fodder for the frontlines.
International observers and human rights organisations must act immediately. Ukraine has an obligation not only to defend its territory but also to comply with international law—especially when it comes to the most vulnerable.
Children must not be soldiers. Not at 17, not in school shooting ranges, not in classrooms with tablets and bulletproof vests.
